My first ever digital artwork!

Writer's picture: Kathy RowanKathy Rowan

This is the story of my first ever photoshop experiment…    It started with me wanting to make a piece of digital work about the Amazon burning and the damage and pain to Mother Earth.

I’m currently working on the theme of Goddesses with my art and I believe the Earth Goddess must be really sad about the terrible pain and suffering to plant and animal life.  I wanted to say something about that with this piece.    I chose the picture below because the woman is clearly grieving and she is ‘anywoman.’  She could be any race, any age – she is a simple, faceless archetype of a grieving woman.

With a bit of trial and error I managed to combine these images on photoshop.

I made the grieving woman’s image translucent so the background image could still be seen, to emphasize that she is a spiritual being.   I liked this result but she still seemed to be ‘on top’ of the image and not fully blended into it.  So, I removed her surroundings (by erasing them).

Finally, I decided to crop the image down to focus on what is really important, which for me is the message of the Goddess Weeping about the Amazon.

I am delighted with this result!

It is simple, but it gets my message across.

Future possibilities

There is potential to create other images using ready made (copyright free) images online or using my own artwork, layering images up and using the translucent effect created with the opacity tool on Photoshop.  This is something I am sure I will use again as this effect is something I am very keen on.  I’ve been looking at ways to create images of ‘non physical’ beings, such as goddesses, fairies, angels.  This is one good use of this tool on Photoshop.
