The Nightmare before Christmas

The team at HIVE invited me to contribute a piece of work for the 'Apricity' exhibition which was to run from mid November to January. All of the artists who are involved in the group agreed it was great to have something to look forward to within the local artistic community again, after the ups and downs of lockdown life 2021.

The brief we were given was to create something for the Christmas Collective that was 'bright, cheerful and saleable' to be hung on the cafe walls, no bigger than A2 in size. This presented something of a challenge to me as my recent work was dark and dramatic rather than bright and cheerful. I wanted to stay true to my own personal style yet appeal to the Christmas shopper who was likely to pop into HIVE in the pre-Christmas period for some quality coffee and cake.

I met a good friend at HIVE for a coffee and catch up and noticed she was wearing a 'Nightmare Before Christmas' jumper that looked cosy and Christmassy. This inspired my little piece, so thanks for that Jules!

We had a grand opening, which I believe they call a 'private view' where artists and their invited guests to come and see the exhibition, before the work was available to the general public. It was a marvellous affair with lots of socializing, wine and some delicious handmade nibbles, including some sensational mince pies!

I really enjoyed socializing with my fellow artists and reminded myself how lucky I am to be part of such a supportive and friendly group.

The first piece of art from the show was sold to another artist within the group. It was a brilliant portrait of David Bowie (top right in the image above). The second piece of art that was sold was mine! So I was delighted about that. My piece was bought as a Christmas gift for a teenager but in the end the buyer decided she wanted to keep it for herself - good for her!

The next exhibition at HIVE will be from a local solo artist, Elizabeth Ward. I can't wait to see all her work up and find out what she's been working on lately...
