A few years ago I entered an on-line art competition from the jacksonart.com/painting website and they gave my confidence a boost, when they put one of my paintings on their shortlist. I didn’t make it through to actually win a prize, but it was great to get that far! So when I saw they were hosting the competition again this year, I thought I’d have another try. As part of the application process, you have to fill in some details about yourself and your work. This turned out to be unexpectedly helpful to me, because they offer some guidance on the website about how to write an Artist’s Statement and Biography and this was something I had been wondering about for a while. Here’s what I came up with and here’s also the piece I have entered. Wish me luck!
Artist Statement
I am inspired by feminine spirituality, fantasy and myths. The magical moments of everyday life. My work explores the relationship between the seen and unseen realities, within the atmosphere of the ‘otherworld’. In this piece ‘Under Moonlight’ I have chosen the media of charcoal and paper to reference time and transformation, as they both come from trees which are transformed by time. The cloaked figure in the artwork is ageless, raceless, faceless, mortal or immortal, mysterious and real. The moon above and water below are symbolic of the Divine Feminine, ever changing, unknowable.
