Making my magic carpet fly!

Writer's picture: Kathy RowanKathy Rowan

Our recent lesson at college had me baffled!  Sometimes (as a dyslexic) I find all the information too much to take in during one lesson.  This was one of those occasions.  Fortunately the tutor provided us with access to written instructions, which meant we can practice after the lesson.  This gave me the opportunity to catch up in my own time!  This was our lesson plan:  Aims  Introduction to montage in Photoshop. Objectives  Introduction. Bring the idea of ‘everything everywhere’ together as a meaningful montage. Combine different images in Photoshop. Transform Photoshop layers – perspective. Create a shadow in Photoshop. Utilize Photoshop cloning tools for creative outcomes. Analyse and evaluate the results on your blog.  This is what we did:  In the first part of the lesson we opened Photoshop, found the image of the tree and also the image of the code (saved from the previous lesson). Then we combined them and set about hiding the tree behind the code. Like this:

Then, we placed this composite image on top of a different background (again from last week).  So more practice of moving things around and combining them.  So far, so good, I thought.

Then we had a go at transforming the shape, to give a different perspective using the transform, move and blending modes to experiment with possibilities.  I was fine with this and thought it was quite fun. It reminded me of a magic, flying carpet.

Finally, we created a shadow effect and positioned it underneath the ‘magic carpet’ to give a realistic effect.  We then gave the carpet the illusion of depth, by adding a section to the front of it to make it look thicker and more solid.

I didn’t manage this part on my own, our tutor helped me but was too quick for me to follow.  However, I have since printed off the written instructions.  I could use them to work from if I wanted to create this sort of effect another time.  I feel happy now I have them in my folder.

The last part of the lesson was meant to be ‘cloning’ but there wasn’t enough time to fit that into the lesson.  We’ll be doing it next week.  I was glad we ran out of time because it felt like my brain was overflowing by the end of the lesson!

So, I reflected on what did and didn’t go so well for me this week and realized I will get more out of these lessons if I am ready prepared for them.  Consequently, I’ve printed off this weeks lesson and will be taking the notes with me to class.  Hopefully, this will give me more confidence and a better chance of keeping up with the lesson.

Future Possibilities

I didn’t like the results from this lesson.  It’s not the sort of art I want to be able to make.  I found it an interesting experiment and I like the originality of these techniques but this isn’t my style at all. It’s not something I want to take forward.
