Meeting a client

Writer's picture: Kathy RowanKathy Rowan

Today was an exciting day! Today I intended to deliver two prints to a client who lives in a nearby village. I don't normally deliver prints, I usually post them to clients, but as the client had invited me over to discuss a commission, it seemed sensible to drop her prints off at the same time. I prefer discussing commissions face to face, as I am keen to understand exactly where the client is coming from, and work out together how to meet (or hopefully exceed) their expectations.

My client had asked me to bring over two prints from digital artworks I created in 2019, 'The Goddess Weeps' and 'Persephone' both sized A4. I took the prints with me as requested, but also took something extra for her consideration. I happened to have a very large canvas with 'The Goddess Weeps' printed on, and thought she might like to see that too. To my delight she decided to buy the large canvas, so I was really glad I took it over with me.

Then we settled down and discussed the commission. I had made a few sketches to help explain my ideas, and these helped us as we discussed her underlying motivation for the work. I was keen to identify suitable symbols to be incorporated into the piece. It was such a treat to work with someone whose ideas and motivations were so similar to my own.

On a practical note, I remembered to pack a measuring tape, so took the opportunity to measure the wall space available for the finished work and this helped us decide on the best size for it.

I would love to tell you more about the commission, but I need to sort out the finer details first . So perhaps that will be my next blog? I will just give you a little hint by saying that I'm excited to get started and the work will probably be my biggest encaustic creation so far! x
