Kwan yin is worshipped in both China and Japan and is one of the most popular goddesses in Asia.  She is always considered to be a goddess of peace and compassion.  She was born as a human princess who wanted to be a priestess so she could help the ordinary people, but her father the King insisted she must marry.  Rather than marry she chose death and in death became a goddess.  She is often depicted standing on an open lotus, she is usually wearing flowing robes and sometimes is holding a small necked vase.

She is the primal feminine force in Taoism, hence her name contains the word ‘yin’.   She is sometimes shown flying over turbulent waters and this shows her helping those at sea or in great danger.   She protects women and children and her statues are often erected close to schools, playgrounds and maternity hospitals.  She is said to dispel all dangers and bring peace to her worshippers.
